The Next Big Web Thing - Loving Teh Web !!!1!1!11
>> Return to The Next Big Web Thing Index

Despite sounding like a song by a 60s Psychedelia band with a name like Mint Teacups or some such, we're nominating
Ruby On Rails as a potential Next Big Web Thing. Its an open source web application framework. Apparently. It uses the programming language Ruby. It claims simplicity and ease of use amongst its strengths, and is growing in its use.
Web hosts are slowly waking up to the potential of ROR with more and more adding support to their hosting packages. Dreamhost and Site5 were amongst the first I know of to add it at the latter half of 2005. I won't claim I know anything about the technology, the benefits, how to use it etc. But it has all the hallmarks of being a big new technology in web applications, so much so its now being melded with
AJAX - the other technology buzzword you'll hear a lot of when it comes to web technology in coming months.

Ruby looks really interesting and makes me wish I had the time to put into a Ruby project. It would be interesting to do a decent sized database development.
Although I wouldn't know where to start, I'm about to get a real Ruby On Rails experience. My web host Site5 is just about to switch the entire admin for the server accounts to a ROR system. They like it their end, I hope its a good as CPanel for us end users. :)
