The Next Big Web Thing - Loving Teh Web !!!1!1!11
>> Return to The Next Big Web Thing Index

If we'd have been here a couple of years earlier, there's no doubt one of our nominations would have been for the mighty
flickr. flickr is seen as one of the services at the vanguard of
Web 2.0, in part for tags and community structure. One other reason is its
open API which allows programmers to access the photos and data on the site. It is one new implementation of the flickr API that has caught our attention today.
fastr is a game of speed. You quickly have to guess the tag that connects the pictures being shown to you. The faster you guess, the more points you get. That's a fairly nice implementation of an old idea, but what makes this one work and standout is you're up against everyone else playing at the current time in real time leaderboard. Its pretty addictive when you see your username rising up the ranks. What's more, there's always the chance you'll see one of your images in the quiz, if you're a flickr member.

Despite sounding like a song by a 60s Psychedelia band with a name like Mint Teacups or some such, we're nominating
Ruby On Rails as a potential Next Big Web Thing. Its an open source web application framework. Apparently. It uses the programming language Ruby. It claims simplicity and ease of use amongst its strengths, and is growing in its use.
Web hosts are slowly waking up to the potential of ROR with more and more adding support to their hosting packages. Dreamhost and Site5 were amongst the first I know of to add it at the latter half of 2005. I won't claim I know anything about the technology, the benefits, how to use it etc. But it has all the hallmarks of being a big new technology in web applications, so much so its now being melded with
AJAX - the other technology buzzword you'll hear a lot of when it comes to web technology in coming months.

An enticing new twist on the
Million Dollar Homepage model that is actually as simple and effective as the much aped original. I'll make no secret of the fact that like many webmasters, the sheer simplicity and effectiveness of the millionaire making ad scheme idea had us kicking ourselves for not thinking it first.
In a strange way it also helped with the inspiration to create this site to try and track and predict these great ideas. Coincidentaly we will be avoiding all the other PixelAdvertising copyists other than ones like this:
Fill My Room, which is another sweep of sheer brilliance.
It not only manages to ape the basic idea of the Million Dollar Homepage, but take it into the real world and adds a sense of childhood fun. Appealing to anyone with the kind of mind that enjoys amassing items and fitting them into a space. It may not get as popular as the original idea, but people who enjoy building blocks will no doubt love it - you buy bricks to fill the room. Buy enough, you get a sponsor slot on the page. Easy as that.
*Note* Unfortunately, the site has now closed and is simply parked. The room never did get filled.

We'll get things rolling with our first entry.
HassleMe is a reminder service with difference. There are plenty of reminder services out there, but this one is different - it will nag you via email.
We'll let them tell you:
"Not eating enough fruit? Forgot to feed the fish again? Need a little help keeping your New Year's resolutions? Tell us what to hassle you about, and we'll nag you via email at semi-unpredictable intervals."
Nice - just what we *didn't need* but amusing none the less.
Welcome to the site, over the coming months we will be featuring the best nominations in our attempt to uncover the Next Big Web Thing. We want your help. Tell us if you've seen something that you think will fit in and if we like it, we'll add it here.
It could be a new site, a new and unique blog, a new web service, an old site with a new spin, a new technology or community - anything web-based.
Tell us about it here and we'll add it we think it has the potential.
At the end of every month we'll select the 10 best then put them into our monthly vote to find the public's favourite. The first poll will be at the end of February - to allow time for the site to be finshed and the nominations to come in. Everything featured between now and then in this section will be eligable. We'll be looking out for stuff as well as using your nominations.
Enjoy the ride, we're already looking forward to it!
