Grupthink

Grupthink - somewhere between Digg and a forumThere's still a lot of potential for the Digg model in the world of the web. The ability for users to help define what the most merit worthy news stories and articles are continues to enthrall and devolp the world over. We've already seen the model applied to video and shopping with great results. Our next nomination represents another fun variation on the model.

Grupthink takes a lighter approach to the Digg proposition. Instead of being news article orientated, it allows users to post topics, like a forum. Then members can post answers to the topic and vote on the results. A range of topics have been posted from the esoteric to the fun. The Digg like answer trail means the top answers rise to the top of the stack. It's a fun community, as well as a great way of tapping the infamous hive mind to get an opinion on something that's bugging you.

And The Winner Of The May Vote Is...

Congratulations to A Swarm Of Angels, winners of the May 2006 Next Big Web Thing. It's a great idea they're pushing, and good luck to them with their film - a lot of people picked up on the idea, I saw it crop up in a few places over the month. In second place we have the real world social network over WiFi, PlaceSite. In third, the artsy shopping site with the innovative navigations, Etsy.

Watching The Web Fly By

Watching The Web Fly By - Harking back to a simpler ageIn this world of Ajax, Ruby On Rails, Web 2.0 and information overload, once in a while a simple idea captures the imagination of the viewing public and set's a trend. The Million Dollar Homepage was one such phenomena that we have mentioned here a few times. It spawned an army of copyists who missed the fact that it had a USP, just copying it wasn't enough. As a result we got some interesting takes on it, a couple of which have featured here, and a whole boat load that just ended up, well, making you wince when you looked at them.

Watching The Web Fly By is yet another take on the model of the Million Dollar Homepage. I get sent so many of these that never make it, this one just made me smile when I opened it. Basically, it's an animated version. It's simple, and to my mine, harks back to an age when every web site seemed to have a photograph with Java reflections below it, or big flashing GIFs plastered all over the place. It simply made me smile on a jaded Friday afternoon - that simple. I think I mouthed the words, Bravo! To be honest, I don't recall having seen an animated Million Dollar knock-off. And as such, I think this one will get sent around a fair bit which is why I've mentioned it.

Mr Dealio

MrDealio - Price tracking across multiple sitesFor me, one of the best things about the internet is the ability it gives you to shop around and get a bargain. There are a number of useful shopping tools available, one of the most common being comparision engines. As useful as they are at providing a snapshot of prices at a moment in time, they lack the ability to track the prices.

Mr Dealio not only gives you a price comparison tool, it adds a price tracking tool into the mix. I've seen a similar tool at ebuyer.com, that allows you to track prices of your catalogued items. As useful as it is, it only allows you to track within their own store. The joy of Mr Dealio is that it does it over a number of stores giving you a look at the overall price trends, and the places you can get the best deal. You can choose to track a specific item over a given period with email alerts, and see which items are falling in price. Currently there's a limited use as it's only US based, and it doesn't have the range of stores that some of the bigger engines have, but it's the sort of tool that you can see just those bigger engines incorporating in the near future - and as an innovative new serivce, gets its place here.
