Page 2: Numbers 20-11 In The Top 25 Stupidly Named Web 2.0 Sites Of 2006

By David Lloyd: September 20th 2006

#20 - Naymz.com

Obviously a play on names, as the site offers to get your name and profile into Google. They're not helped my confidence by replacing teh Ss wid teh zeds - loginz, detailz, etc. Even though I've been looking at it all week, it still takes me three goes to get it right when I type into the address bar. Visit Naymz.
Overall Score: 7

#19 - Mon.itor.us

This is not the place for an argument, but I do consider the .us TLD an obscure one, period. Throw in a subdomain from hell, and what would be a nice, simple and memorable URL becomes an exercise in patience and spelling when repeating it to my granny. Monitor your favourite sites with Mon.itor.us
Overall Score: 8

#18 - Lingr.com

Ok, so this one is a fairly straight-forward flickr wannabe with the dropped E - it's one of several I could have included with the same score, but it tripped my absurdity filter as I can't help singing that Cranberries song whenever I hear the word linger. Join me, "Do you have to let it lingr, <my line>like a bad smell on your fingr.</my line> Do you have to? Do you have to?" Go and Lingr.
Overall Score: 9

#17 - Calcr.com

Whilst #18 merely dropped a fairly standard and somewhat hackneyed penultimate e, this bad boy moves the goal posts by dropping a the whole middle of the word. Yes it's only 5 letters and memorable, but try saying Calc-err without feeling a bit strange in the back of your throat. Go add some numbers at Calcr.
Overall Score: 9

#16 - Adveracio.us

A mashup between advertising and veracious maybe - another attempt at being so cutting edge you need to invent your own language, which trips both my absurdity and spelling filters with a nice little obscure domain to help it along. An advertising news site in Digg-alike clothing, make up your own words to describe Adveracio.us.
Overall Score: 9

#15 - Empressr.com

Another word mashup, with extra kudos for dropping a penultimate e. However, being as they are all about online presentations, one can't help wonder if they'd have been better calling themselves Impressr - I can't see the tie in with a female emperor? As a result, spelling and absurdity scores also kick in. Make a nice presentation with Empressr.
Overall Score: 10

#14 - Nowsy.com

This one particular sticks in my craw - it's so hip it crosses the line into absurdity. A made up word that could be maybe nosey or drowsy? Either way, if I want news then I want monolithic big old hard news, not whimsy. Create your own news dashboard at Nowsy.
Overall Score: 10

#13 - Talkety.com

Talkety? More like yuckety - can you hear someone saying that in real life without wanting to smack them around the ear? "Oh man! He's so talkety I cou... Ow! Why did you hit me!?" It's made up, could be spelt several ways and is really absurd to my ears. If you'd like to try their mobile connection thingy, get Talkety.
Overall Score: 10

#12 - Mon.eytrack.in

This one's just wrong on so many levels. Obscure domain with a subdomain from hell. But kudos for being ballsy enough to stick with real world words, even though you have to mentally add an apostrophe to the end of it for it to make sense. The plus is, now they have the eytrack.in domain, they can do such needed services as donk.eytrack.in, hon.eytrack.in and spank.eytrack.in. Follow your finances with Mon.eytrack.in.
Overall Score: 11

#11 - Pheedo

Ooof! Made up word, phonetically spelt and on the absurd side - you're going to have to spell it to anyone that's interested in visiting. Short and memorable maybe, but most people are going to snigger and say, "Pheedo? As in Paedo?" Manage your feeds with Pheedo.
Overall Score: 12
