The internet has spawned a wealth of great tools, sites, technologies and communities. The ever evolving landscape of the web has something for everyone, and has at times made our lives easier, more fun and more entertaining. It's caused us a few problems too - but my fascination with it just grows from day to day.
The Next Big Web Thing was initially started to look at new sites and technologies. It was going to be a group effort, but commitments got in the way and I've now (August 2006) decided to keep it as a personal blog which focuses on web related things. This new version isn't really that much different to the original version - other than losing the monthly polls and singular format of the posts. For posterity's sake, Version 1's mission statement follows the newest one.
The whole purpose of the blog is to now comment on a range of web and internet things that interest me as a web builder and designer. From new technologies, innovation and new sites as before, to an increasing scope that covers Web 2.0 and other internet trends, SEO and SEM news and more satire and humour related posts. Basically, if it's internet related, it's fair game. There'll be a lot of gripes as well as celebrations.
The version 1 mission of celebrating and informing about exciting new things is still important but will take more of a back seat. There are new sections, a newsletter and a fun quiz. If I feel the need to expand those extra sections in the future I can now do so with relative ease.
I started this site out of a number of interests, my love for the web and the innovations and opportunities it creates, my love of making website's, and a love of following sites and ideas to see them blossom and grow into something special. I wanted try and set up a site that both preempts these new sites and celebrates them. I also wanted to create a site that allows the small to be mentioned alongside the huge concepts.
Most of all, and, because my vision is fairly small, I wanted to make a site that was a collaboration in the grandest sense - so this blog is a collaborative effort. Its a collaboration between the Next Big Web Thing team, webmasters / producers / designers / coders the world over and the internet audience. We need you all in this to make it work and to celebrate the stuff we all enjoy on the web.
This is all intended to be fun, we may miss the odd big hit and we may find ones that otherwise would have gone unheralded. We don't claim to be an accurate barometer in any sense, but we do aim to have fun looking.
Going forward, the site has a newer more flexible style to adding things that interest me, so I'll keep blogging, continue to add articles as and when I get around to them. I like this new more personal approach, so this should pretty much be it for the future.
